Celebrating 60 years of Kenya-China relations

The event brought together more than 100 Kenyans who studied in Chinese universities and featured activities including Chinese martial arts, traditional Chinese music, dances, poetry awards for alumni who have excelled across diverse sectors of the economy as well as a screening of a documentary on achievements from Sino-Kenya relations.

Kenya China Alumni Association Award winners

Business Award: Ahmed Shaffy

Ahmed Shaffy created anfal sacco this year which has a growing membership of over 100 members and has made over 2 million in profit in the first year of service

Tour Guide Operator: Antony Karanja

Owner of afriworld safaris which handles high end Chinese clientelle has over 5 years in service and has trained and mentored many Chinese guides

Media Award: Carol Wambui

Has been posting kenya china news and updating the alumni on different Chinese cultural events for the last two years as a volunteer, she manages alumni social media and news pages and heads the alumni media association started this year

Lifetime achievement: Faith Mworia

Has over 15 years in teaching mandarin and has taught Chinese at all levels starting in the confucius Institute of kenyatta university and going on to start discovery Chinese center which has trained over 200 kenyans in Chinese and is the biggest cultural Center that teaches Chinese which is not under a university

Lifetime achievement: Joseph Maritim

Has spent over 30 years in engineering, architecture and construction planning and participated in the design of most sky scraoers in Nairobi including integrity center grand regenct hotel and many others.

Public Service Award: Nobert Njoroge

He's an interpreter an interpreter trainer a teacher and a tour guide He's dedicated his life to bringing chinese speakers together and bringing harmony between kenyan and chinese people, he's created different groups to help ensure this dream becomes a reality and conducted differerent trainings and organised different workshops to empower alumni. In the past he's started an alumni table banking group to help alumni save money, hes startes an online library to give more people access to chinese learning reasources, hes one of the founders of the teachers group and intiated school visits to motivate chinese learrners in different schools, Nobert has been is continously involved in the mentorship and training of interpreters in the chinese speaking fraternity and is at the forefront of fighting for more proffesionalism and training among chinese speaksrs to enhance the quality of work among interpreters of the chinese language.

Environmental Champion: Albert Njoroge

Has planted over 1000 trees in his school this past year and is actively involved in different environmental conservation initiatives that help school students conserve water and keep their environment green

Educator of the year: Beth Waweru

Teaches at kitengela internation school started Chinese class there and is the secretary of the teachers Association is one of the initiators of the chinese cookout idea and has been very active in visiting schools where Chinese is studied to motivate students

Alumni of the year: Santana Muthoni

Has been very active in the alumni committee and is always available in the planning and strategizing for Chinese events and draftinv letters to partners . Santana is currently working from the diaspora to bring together Chinese speakers outside kenya for some intiatives for the alumni next year.

Interpreter of the year: Sylvia Gathoni

Has been an interpreter in different infrastructure projects in Kenya and exhibits a high degree of faithfulness and proffesionalism in her duties, she has perfect Chinese pronounciation and went through the interpreter training program offered by the alumni this year, she's currently pursuing her masters in chinese literature in China

Innovator of the Year: Nicole Shitolwa

Has come up with several innovative projects for the alumni and the teachers group that increased people to people engagement between Chinese and kenyans like the crawafors Chinese cookout, the Chinese food extravaganza and students online exchange, she is at the forefront of planning for the planning of county School visits next year and making chinese learning more effective outside Nairobi.
